The SDCG (San Diego Chain Gang) comes up to go garaging and throw a free race meant primarily for fun every once in awhile. This one happened November of 2011 in Irvine as usual.
Rod Gon seems to be somewhat of the leader of the chain gang and he organizes the event. There were tons of new faces though and many first time racers. Carly Richardson from Landyachtz even came all the way down from Canada just for this race. Victor from sector 9 showed up as always for the SDCG events. The level of stokage was pretty high and grew as the night wore on. The garages were fun and there tons of people crashing onto each other.There were lots of bloody knees and elbows everywhere.
We continued on to the second location and raced, skated, had funand finally ran the award ceremony. At the end of the night the previous king (Rod Gon) handed over the crown to Drew Edwards making him the new king of the garage…until next time. – Leecifer
Barrett fucking Junction! If you have ever skated the road you understand this very well. This is the jankiest pavement you can find. Most people would say it is unskateable. This road has that sketchy gnarliness to it and you have to expect the unexpected. It is well known because of the pavement which grows continually worse each year.
Barrett Junction is a big bro-down with good friends and a road that we don’t get hassled at as long as we are American. Each Barrett Junction seems to be a new book of it’s own where stories are made, tales are told and friendships bond.
The first night you are there, as you look into the sky and you can see every star in the universe, a shooting star or two go by. You can see the milky way, planets and other foreign objects. A wolf howls, the branches move and then the dirt bike comes roaring back into the camp reminding you that you aren’t alone out there.
Sunday morning rolls around and it’s race time. With Mike and Joe running the show there was no bullshitting around. Practice runs were held in the morning and once the race had started heats were run one after the other. It was over in a fashionable time and the award ceremony didn’t take an hour. Straight to the point. No kissing anyone’s asses for 2 hours after the race.
If you haven’t made it out to one of these events yet then you are missing out on a great time. It was my first time there myself but I will not miss it again. – Leecifer
The SDDRL (San Diego Downhill Race League) crew met back up September 11 at Talega for a fun day of racing.

Races held at Talega always end up extremely exciting and this day was no different. The course is very technical and you are bound to see many riders wipe out into the dirt on a few turns. You also have to be able to do heelside and toeside predrifts to be able to compete here. The race was being started at the very top of the road. The first portion of the course was a chute which offered a good drag race until they got into the hairpin portion of the race course. There were four turns that riders had to navigate through. First riders went through a 90 degree right hand turn which then dropped into the big hairpin left where most riders slid off the course. After the left it dropped down into a hairpin right with the finish line just around the corner.

The race was held in two divisions. A grom division and an open division. Riders in both divisions pushed their limits.

Roger Jones did have a bad crash and the paramedics were called as a precaution. He was later released from the hospital with no more than a headache.

Disco balls, dancing shoes and a course designed to test out the skills of everyone who competed. That’s right! It was again time for the 2011 Downhill Disco presented by www.muirskate.com.

The course this year set the bar for years to come. “I think that kickers are going to be the big thing for the next 12 months, so you guys learn how to do them because we’re gonna do it next year too” said www.muiskate.com shop owner Scott Lembach.

With a constant barrage of people coming down the hill and various features set up throughout the course there was never a dull moment.

The riders competing in the event were separated into two different groups based on age. The younger riders were called the Disco Squad and the older group was called the A-Team.

There was a race in which they timed how long it took riders to make it through the course. The course was a cones course designed to be difficult to navigate through. It included jump ramps, tunnels and a hippy jump to make things interesting for the riders and the spectators.

After the race was held for both competing groups a slide jam was held. The slide jam was full of features to help riders keep ripping.

Out of all the features the big kicker ramp was the focal point. Riders were going huge. Many 180′s and even a 360 were thrown down in the list of tricks landed. No big deal.

The gnar bar got raised a step further when 3 brave men decided to lay at the end of the kicker ramp as skaters launched over them. 3 people soon turned to 4. It was then raised again when someone decided to sit in a green plastic chair, letting riders launch clear over his head.

The amount of people launching off the ramps, attempting and landing 180′s and getting some hang time blew me away. Everyone was sliding, and jumping, and moving to the beat.
The 2011 Dragon Skate Race held on California Ave in the University of California Irvine was a day full of fun and excitement for everyone.

The event was hosted by UC Irvine’s Beta Theta Pi as a charity event to help raise money for the The Free Wheelchair Mission which is a nonprofit organization that helps provide wheelchairs to people in developing countries that can’t afford one. The wheelchairs cost $59.20 to manufacture.
The race was not held on a very exciting course however the addition of hay bails at the end caused for some great crashes and excitement for the crowd.

Some riders would pin it full speed launching off their boards exploding through the hay bails landing in the street on the other side. Hay bails would disintegrate as riders bailed through them at over 30 m.p.h.
Other riders chose to throw a slide or foot brake before hitting the painfully hard hay bails while lots more riders avoided them completely.

Full padding and helmets were required for all riders. The cost of entry was $10 which got you 2 runs. Each additional run was $5.
The course was set up with a high tech timing system using wires in the ground that would start and then stop the times as riders would cross over them.

Put away the downhill boards and bust out the double kicks and mini cruisers to entertain yourself in this scenario. Ride with a group of your friends down several cement stories of hundreds of parking spaces. Right turn after right turn, it becomes a race to the bottom. Take the elevator back up for another run. Dodge a security guard…or two. Then do it again another night. Not necessarily fast yet still extremely fun, check out the battle on the way down.
Hiking up the steep trail and turning the corner the course was finally visible. Two canopies marked the beginning and end of where the slide jam would be taking place.
There was no cars on this road at all making it the perfect spot to hold a slide jam. Also the area of the road we were on was not visible to anyone from the streets or neighborhoods below.
Riders threw down their best stuff, many of them able to conquer the kicker ramp. As the slide jam was coming to an end the cops showed up ensuring the end of the jam. As people talked to the cops shwag was handed out and winners were announced.
With an eclectic mix of big name riders and free agents – some hailing from as far as the Philippines – present, the Talega Halloween Slide Jam once again proved that SoCal can provide a world-class course.
It was fun seeing people dressed up and pushing the limit doing absolutely gnarly maneuvers on their skateboards. With the two kicker ramps set up riders had plenty of launch to help them go big. Both kicker ramps were big, however the large kicker ramp was just massive. This ramp made for both big tricks and big falls.
Everyone got plenty of runs in and before we knew it, it was time for the contest to begin. Hot dogs were consumed and the plenty of grilling was getting done while lights and generators were set up. Darkness was falling and as the road became less and less visible a police chopper flew in and provided light for some riders. After about 20 minutes of the spotlight as the only light, the generators were fired up and the course was back to daylight.
With a police chopper still circling over head with their spotlight the event began. Run after run, trick after trick, a spotlight from above and tons of riders ripping created a really cool atmosphere. Forty minutes to an hour went by when three police officers came walking up the hill with their flashlights. “Do you know how much money it costs to put a chopper in the air?” one officer said. “We honestly thought you were just helping us out with light,” a skater replied.
Due to a stupid law in San Clemente the event was shut down by the 5-0. Apparently due to the powers of darkness you are not allowed to skateboard at night in the city of San Clemente. The cops were nice about it and let us pack up and leave, with no citations..
We all met at a park right down the street from where the slide jam was. Awards and swag were handed out to anxious skaters. Everyone got a hat, dvd and plenty of stickers. Many riders got trucks, wheels, gloves and several other prizes were handed out to the winners. Three lucky winners left with brand new Sector 9 decks.

On May 15, 2010 off the 15 freeway in Poway, Ca a group of around 30 skaters gathered around, antsy, to shred the slalom-style race course designed to test the speed and skill of some of Southern California’s top longboard riders. The top section of the course was set up with cones and opened into a narrow pathway leading down a canyon where riders hit over 30 mph as they set themselves up for a full speed tuck and pinned it to the finish.
Groms also had their own class, but the rules stayed the same, as both groups were able to compete in either a singles or doubles, or both. The singles competition was every man for himself and the doubles competition was designed for riders to team up with another competitor stopping the clock after both the riders made it to the finish line.
This made for a very exciting race as many riders were unable to attain the goal of making through the slalom section without knocking over any cones. A few came back from the finish line with bleeding elbows and ripped shirts, while others riders navigated through the course with style and ease.
