25 year old snowmobile rider Caleb Moore was performing big tricks on his snowmobile during the snowmobile freestyle competition when he crashed performing a back flip. During the freestyle competition riders have 75 seconds to perform tricks and impress the judges.

Nearing the end of Moore’s 75 second run he attempted to back flip his 450 pound snowmobile and under rotated. The ski’s of the sled dug into the snow launching Caleb head first into the snow with the snowmobile chasing him and landing on top of him hitting him in the head and chest.

He laid unconscious for awhile and when he woke up he said it was like waking up from a long dream. He walked himself over to a medical tent where he was placed on a stretcher and put into an ambulance. He was diagnosed with a concussion at the scene which would have been his 11th by count.

Caleb’s brother Colten Moore was also competing in the freestyle event. When Colten came up to the same jump where his brother had crashed a little earlier he over rotated the backflip and crashed hard off the back of the sled.

“They’ll do some big trick and my heart skips a beat,” said Wade Moore, Caleb’s father. “This is not new to us,” Wade said as both the Moore Brothers were rushed to the hospital.

After being examined in the hospital Caleb was found to have a bleeding heart and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital where he had an emergency surgery.

The crash happened Thursday January 24, 2013 and Caleb died a week later in Grand junction hospital.

Caleb Moore’s death is a scary reminder of how dangerous the world of extreme sports can be. “It is definitely a scary thing for a sport like ours,” said Levi LaValle (X games competitor.) “The only thing we can do is we can look at that and learn from it and look at how we can try to prevent that. Other than that, you look at it, what happened to him, it was an accident. He’s done that trick multiple times. He’s practiced. He’s done everything he can to prevent that.”

An entertaining day full of cheesy dance skits, colorful costumes and many unsuccessful attempts at flight. The Red Bull Flugtag event brought 116,000 spectators to McCovey Cove, right outside of the San Francisco Giants stadium.

Thirty-five teams lined the streets getting ready for their turn to launch their homemade crafts off a 30 ft tall ramp. These crafts had requirements to be under 450 lbs including the pilot and to be less than 30 feet wide.

The Red Bull Air Force Team skydove in and landed on the dock. Soon after that a song that must have been named “jump” started playing. All I could see was orange hair and pom pom’s bouncing around everywhere as the team danced around their float.

“Extra long, super talented, their sweating. Time to get into your pizza tub. ” said the announcer.

The pilot got into the craft as the other 4 members of the pilot crew pushed the craft off he end. The craft flipped off the end catapulting the pilot off the top. He ended up in the water at about the 30 ft mark.

Each team had their own little skit they performed. Everything from men painted in full body paint as different cats, to guys in American flag speedo’s. There was a banana float, a Nyan cat, a flying Dia Del Muerte style skull (2nd place) and even a flying dragon.

Team Movember decked out with fake mustache’s won the contest flying 58 ft. “The superior engineering of the most distinguished of mustaches cannot fail,” said team captain William A. Hinkamp.

The Californauts won the people’s choice awards flying a huge surfboard into the sea.

My personal favorite was Team Skyjackers which was the third place team. The team all dressed up as Jack from Jack in the Box in all suits and a big white bobble heads. They all started bouncing and dancing around “kinda in coordination” to a popular rap song….”Poppin’ bottles in the ice. Like a blizzard. When we drink we do it right getting slizzard……” After shaking their buts around and dancing like corporate geeks the pilot climber up a ladder and into the taco pilot cabin on top of the aircraft. “You gotta go faster then that, you gotta go faster than that. Go, go!” Yelled the announcer. They pushed the craft off the end and it soared to about 60 ft. The pilot didn’t even get wet, still safely on top of the craft in the taco he sat.

At the end of all this hilarity Team Movember got the bragging rights and won an unforgettable day of skydiving alongside the Red Bull Air Force team.

The second prize winners Team Sugarskull won a chance to sail the sea’s with ORACLE TEAM USA in ttheir chase boat.

The third prize winner s Team Skyjackers won a chance to go to iFly and participate in some indoor skydiving with a member of the Red Bull Air Force team.

So being in the action sports industry and hearing about a charity event for the Surfrider Foundation it seemed like a good thing for us to make it out to. Support a good cause and hang out with good people. Maybe even win one of the awesome raffle prizes they were giving away. (Hoping for the Schecter Guitar).

The OC AD Federation worked hard to put this together. “We have an executive board that got together to choose a venue location, the theme, the charities involved, the music and everything else involved,” said Raquel Figlo, Promotions and former Program Director from 2010 & 2011. “I have a great group of people working with me.”

The event was pretty cool, located at Cabo Cantina in Newport beach, Ca. (For those that don’t know, this is one of the hot spots in Newport.) Outside Cabo Cantina there is a nice gazebo and grassy area where various lawn and beach games were being played. Chairs lined up in front of the gazebo as the band played some soothing gentle tunes. A table full of prizes sat in the middle of the gazebo and everyone had strings of raffle tickets hoping to win one of the many prizes.

The money from the raffle tickets was being used as charity money for the surf rider foundation. “I love working with surf rider foundation because I love what they do for the environment and educating kids about the importance of keeping the beaches clean,” said Raquel. I devote so much of my time to helping different local charities because I believe it is important to help the community you live in and also to provide a service that can better inhance the lives of others.”

“I would really like to thank my sponsors for donating such awesome prizes for this years Beach Bash. When I asked Jonny Coffin if he would like to be apart of the event he was all down for it because he is a surfer himself! Being a native from the south Mike Cirovolo of Schecter Guitars has sponsored many reliefe charities over the years and jumped at the opportunity to donate for a charity event.I would also like to thank Al Bane for Leather because he designed an authentic customed leather guitar strap to go along with the Schecter guitar that was raffled off at the event. Hemp is one of the most amazing plants on this planet, and it has remained illegal in the United States for more than 70 years.

Banned in 1937, the production of hemp became illegal due to oil companies and businesses trying to compete with the plant. They knew that by banning hemp, they would take over the market and their inferior products could become mainstream.

It is completely ridiculous that hemp is illegal today. Hemp can be used to make textiles, fabrics, paper, rope, canvas, paints, oil, energy, food, and even building materials for housing.

There are many products containing hemp that can be found at your local supermarket. Although growing hemp is not allowed in the United States, having the sterile seeds in your food, or oils in your shampoo is still allowed.

From 1619 to the mid 1700′s, it was illegal not to grow the Indian hempseed, and it could be used as money in certain colonies. This was to encourage crop production.

In 2001 the DEA tried banning hemp altogether. That would have meant possessing a soap or shampoo containing any form of hemp would have had the same mandatory minimum sentence as possessing marijuana. Millions of Americans would suddenly become criminals.

Three men might be responsible for the illegality of hemp. DuPont, Mellon, and Hearst had a lot invested in petroleum and timber resources. They saw hemp as a major threat to their investments. They deliberately confused hemp and marijuana, making it possible to pass a marijuana prohibition bill.

If we were to ban fossil fuels including trees for paper and construction, hemp would be the only renewable natural resource that would be capable of providing the overall majority of the world’s paper and textiles; meeting all the worlds transportation, industrial and home energy needs, all while reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil and cleaning up our atmosphere.

Hemp fibers cannot be smoked, and cannot get you high. There is no THC (the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana) in hemp.

There are many chemicals used to grow plants on today’s farms. 50% of all chemicals used in American agriculture today, is used for cotton growing. These chemicals cause harm to the environment.

Hemp needs no chemicals, and has very few weed or insect enemies. On the other hand cotton has many enemies and a heavy chemical dependence.

Henry Ford, inventor of the Model-T, made a car out of hemp called the plastic hemp car.

The plastic hemp car was made of hardened hemp fibers, sizzle and wheat straw. The car was lighter then steel. Amazingly it could withstand 10 times the impact without denting.

An incredibly rare thing hemp does rather quickly is it will petrify, becoming stronger than cement while maintaining one-sixth the weight. This can be used to build houses and make other building materials.

In 1937 it was illegal to have hempseeds in your possession. Hemp was banned. Five years later in 1942, the movie “Hemp for Victory” was produced by the U.S. department of agriculture, trying to encourage farmers to grow more hemp. It was then banned again by the Federal Government.

The hemp seed has many nutritional benefits. They are excellent sources of amino acids and can be used in many foods. The hempseed can also be used for its highly nutritious vegetable oil. This vegetable oil contains the highest amount of essential fatty acids that can be found in the plant kingdom. That is to say that out of the over 3-million plus edible plants that grow on Earth, that no other single plant source can compare with the nutritional value of the hempseeds.

Before 1937 paper was all made out of hemp. Usually it was made out of recycled sails and clothing. Hemp is a much better quality paper. Every book, every piece of paper was printed using hemp. Even the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

Our country is globalizing, and the world is changing. Hemp can help save the world. It can help stop deforestation, the greenhouse effect, and even save our economy. Why does this amazing plant remain illegal today? -Leecifer

Cracked skulls, brain damage, and death are some of the things that can happen from not wearing a helmet, and many new or inexperienced riders still choose ride without one. Most do so following the example of several professional riders.

Professionals have an uncanny way of balancing. They know where they are in the air and it seems as if they can easily catch their falls with their hands and feet.

A large majority of those professionals have also taken major crashes resulting in various types injuries, even they aren’t invincible.

Within the past five years, we have had many of our fellow riders killed or permanently injured due to accidents involving riders not wearing helmets. Just go talk to an emergency room trauma nurse about the severity and number of injuries that could have been prevented if the victim had been wearing a helmet, it is appalling.

Watch some videos on the Internet of kids hitting their heads and you will see some pretty graphic images, you might just get scared into wearing one.

Wearing a helmet shows a sign of intelligence. It shows that you are smart enough to want to protect your brain. If younger kids see you wearing a helmet they will be more likely to wear theirs, especially if they look up to you. This means you could potentially be helping protect the lives of young riders.

I went to the skate park recently and there were a total of three of us wearing helmets, and about 15 kids not wearing helmets. About six of those kids had brought helmets, but left them on the side with their stuff while they skated. Some of them were doing some pretty fast, big tricks. It was unclear to me whether they would decide to actually put it on.

If you have ever attempted to ride a skateboard down ramps, or even your driveway for the first time, then you will know that if your balance is a little of you are in danger of flying back and hitting your head. Keeping your balance is not as easy as it looks unless you have many hours logged on board.

Most professional extreme sports athletes do not don helmets, and set extremely terrible examples for riders of all abilities, mainly young newcomers. After all, you don’t want to stand out as the new kid when you’re young. You want to be like your favorite skater and be exactly like them.

There are multitudes of skate, snowboard, BMX, and rollerblade videos with sponsored professionals not wearing helmets. In the videos they pull off tricks that are extremely difficult, making them look easy. So easy, that after watching it, an attempt might be made, leaving you to find out how difficult it actually is.

Protective gear is especially important for inexperienced riders, or people who are pushing their limits; trying something they haven’t done before.

Losing your balance can easily happen with any extreme sport, and unexpected elements can come into play at any time.

It is always good to be prepared for the worst, and wearing a helmet while participating in these activities is a great way to accomplish this. After all a crash isn’t usually something you’d expect or want to happen… it just does. – Leecifer

If you’re still rocking an old phone, like I was not too long ago, then you’re missing out. I recently joined the whole smartphone craze, and I have been addicted to my phone ever since. Everything is so convenient. From checking your e-mail, to seeing updates from the game while your out on with your chick. Well, with all the apps out there it is sometimes hard to find the right ones. Although I did not get my phone to play games on it, that happens to be part of the fun.

         
There has been a new app developed geared towards downhill skaters called Downhill Xtreme. It has an addicting gameplay, advancing you through races into the pro division. It doesn’t take long before you get the opportunity to change your looks, get a better board, and upgrade your wheels. There are qualifying heats where you race with a ghost of yourself with the best time you have had on that run. You can also play online outlaw races where the winner takes all and you race with real people from around the world.

The game is lots of fun and fairly addicting. The buttons are simple; Hold the right side of the screen to tuck, tilt to steer, and hold the left side of the screen to brake (tilting the screen while doing it to pre drift some turns). As you advance, it gets more difficult. Wheels must be used wisely as they are for use on limited number of runs, and they are expensive. Remember buy your wheels wisely and to go pro you have to have a helmet. – Leecifer

Located in the Sin City just off the strip, Vegas Indoor Skydiving is sure to provide a  good time for all you thrill seekers. From the moment you start watching the training video to the moment you step out of the wind tunnel your adrenaline is pumping. But before the post-ride endorphin rush kicks in, you must  lay it all on the net in “your x” form to get lifted into the air as winds reaching speeds of up to 120 mph propel you into the ceiling. For first timers like myself it is hard to keep a stable flight in the air, but there is an instructor there to keep you from flying into the wall. After cycling through everyone in our group a few times our time at Vegas Indoor Skydiving was coming to a close. A dvd was delivered into our hands after so that we can re-live the excitement that’s sure to bring back smiles from ear to ear. This was definitely a highlight of our Vegas trip and I would have stayed in that wind tunnel all day if they let me.

Gardening Gloves and Cutting Board

Step 1: You need to cut the cutting board into the shape you want your pucks to be. Generally circles will work best when making your own slide gloves.

Step 2: After you have the circles cut out you want to heat up one side with a blow torch. It will turn white and then you want to stick the gardening gloves right on top. This will cause them to stick to the gardening gloves.  *Be careful it’s hot.

Step 3: You can make the pucks double layered if you want to make it last longer.
